Thomas graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1976 with an undergraduate degree in economics, and graduated magna cum laude from North Carolina Central School of Law. He also earned a Master of Science degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Computer Science.

Thomas is registered to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. In addition to North Carolina State Courts, Thomas is admitted to practice in both the Middle and Eastern District Federal Courts.
